A “Star” in Lafayette

When saying “a ‘star’ in Lafayette”, what will you think of? For me, the Star City Coffee & Ale House will come to my mind. It is a combination of coffee house, restaurant and pub, which was opened in January 2013 and located in 210 Main Street, Lafayette.

According to Star City Coffee & Ale House’s official website, Star City’s name is derived from Lafayette’s nickname in the mid 1800’s as the “Star City of the West”.

Walking inside, it is not a very big and bright place. Instead, Star City Coffee & Ale House creates a quiet, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for customers. It is a really great place for people to do readings, meet with old friends, or date with significant others.

Looking at the wall, there are lots of decorations helping create the relaxing atmosphere, graffiti, posters, wooden shelves are included.

I did a short interview with one of the customers named Mary, she said she usually comes to this perfect place. When she has work to do, this place will help her engage in her work; when she doesn’t have work, she may choose a book from book shelf to spend a whole afternoon. She also mentioned that, “All of decorations on the wall can reflect that this coffee house has their own culture. If their walls are empty, I will feel boring.”

Since this was my first time to visit Star City & Ale House, I tried one of their black tea called Chinese Breakfast. One of the staffs told me the tea leaves they used were selected carefully. In addition, their coffee are direct trade coffee from specialty roasters across the United States. They are always proud of their coffee and tea’s good quality.

In addition to the coffee and tea. They also have a separated area for offering beer and wine. Furthermore, they are offering some food and desserts to accompany with drinks.

Now, if I ask you again what is the “star” in Lafayette, what would you say? Star City Coffee & Ale House in the Star City of the West will offer you a new place to enjoy the life.

Can Coffee Kill You?

Can coffee kill you? The answer is yes.

According to Warrior Coffee’s official website, if you drink 80-100 cups (23 litres) in a short session, 10-13 grams of caffeine will be accumulated in your body. Too much caffeine in your body can lead to death. But before you reach this point, you will be killed by drinking too much liquid. Even drinking 23 litres of water can kill you.

Further more, the Mayo Clinic states that consuming more than 500-600 mg of caffeine a day may lead to insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, fast heartbeat, or muscle tremors. One of these diseases can disrupt your daily life.

However, the negative effects of consuming coffee vary from person to person. If a person has anxiety disorder, smoking habits, or alcohol addiction, the negative effects of caffeine would be compounded. In addition, the effects also depend on people’s weight. Here I use a caffeine calculator to show you how much coffee may kill me depend on my weight (115 pounds). And you can also use this calculator to find out your lethal does.

Coffee has lots of benefits for human body. But drinking too much will harm your health and even lead to death. So controlling your quantity of consuming coffee is the key point to your health.

Different Countries, Different Cultures, Different Cups of Tea

Tea is a world-wide drink, just like coffee. Since tea travels around the world for a long time, it has been changed into different forms based on different cultures in order to adapt to local customs. I am going to introduce some famous tea in the world to you.

Chinese Pu-erh Tea

pu-erh-teaThere are lots of famous tea originating in China. But today I only introduce Pu-erh tea to you. Pu-erh tea is a variety of fermented tea, which is produced in Yunan province, China, and named after Pu’er city. It is mainly divided into two categories: sheng (raw) and shou (cooked). Since the tea is fermented, the flavor of Pu-erh is rich and earthy without bitterness.

British Black Tea

British black tea can be served on its own or with milk and/or sugar. People may take it several times a day. For example, they can have a cup of tea with bread and egg in the morning, and in the afternoon they will take afternoon tea with cakes or other desserts. In the early history, only nobilities can consume these black tea. But nowadays, most people could afford and enjoy it.

Japanese Matcha Tea

matcha-teaMatcha is a powdered green tea, which is produced by finely ground and high-quality green tea leaves. Workers only pick the best buds, and depending on whether the leaves are rolled out flat before drying or whether they are laid out to dry will result in two different green teas. If the leaves that are laid out to dry become Tencha, which is the leaf used for making matcha. Once the leaf is de-veined, de-stemmed, and stone-ground it becomes the fine powder known as matcha.

American Sweet Iced Tea

There are two traditional tea in the United States, iced tea and sweet tea. The only difference between them is sugar. In 1795, South Carolina is the first place in the United States where tea was grown. And it is the only state to ever have produced tea commercially. Now, both sweet tea and iced tea is distributed around the United States. People will drink it not only during the hot summer, but also during other seasons to serve with most meals.

Taiwanese Bubble Tea

bubble-teaFinally comes my personal favorite tea. Taiwanese bubble tea is a combination of milk and tea, which originates in Taiwan in the early 1980s. The black bubble inside the tea is mainly made of starch. And the overall taste of bubble tea is sweet without bitterness.

In West Lafayette, there are some stores selling bubble tea, including KongFu Tea, Basil Thai, and Latea Bubble Tea Lounge. As a Chinese student who usually buy bubble tea, I strongly recommend Latea to you. There are lots of different kinds of bubble tea with different flavors. It is really worthy to go to the store and try a cup of bubble tea.

Do You Drink Coffee or Tea in the Right Time?

Many people may have a cup of coffee or tea as their first thing in the morning. Actually, this is WRONG!!!

So when is the best time in a day to drink a coffee or tea if you want to keep awake and energetic? Let me start with some biology terms.

Our body is working based on circadian clock. Circadian clock is a 24 hour biological cycle that occurs within our body. It tells you when to wake, sleep, eat, and so forth.

Our body will produce cortisol at some certain points in circadian clock. It is a hormone that makes you awake and alert. level-changes                                      (photo credits to “I Love Coffee” by Ryoko Iwata)

Here is a chart that shows how your cortisol level change in a day. It is clear to see that the peak of cortisol release is around 8:00 a.m.

cortisoldiurnal                                                              (photo credits to Ergo-log.)

Production of cortisol means your body is naturally caffeinating itself. If you are drinking coffee or tea when your cortisol level are in peak, the effects of caffeine will be greatly diminished.

So if you want your coffee or tea to give you energy, the best time for drinking them is 9:30 to 11:30 in the morning.

In order to decide which coffee shop you can go during the certain time, I list operation hours of some local coffee stores for you to look.

Know Inside & Choose What You Want

Do you know what kinds of ingredients are in your coffee? Most people don’t know what to choose when they first buy coffee because they don’t know what’s inside in each kind of coffee. Will that be too bitter? Will that be too sweet? If you know ingredients in each coffee and proportion of them, these questions would be answered by yourself.

Now, I will list some popular coffee and explain what’s inside.

%e7%be%8e%e5%bc%8f                                       2/3 waterwater +  1/3  expressoexpresso

Americano is one of the most popular choices in American’s life. Since it only contains water and expresso, it just has 15 calories in a 16oz cup of coffee. If you are on diet and you can tolerate its bitter taste, Americano will be your best choice.

%e6%8b%bf%e9%93%811/6 Foamed Milk %e5%a5%b6%e6%b3%a1 + 1/2 Steamed Milk milk

+ 1/3 expressoexpresso

Latte is a shortened form of the Italian word caffè latte, which means “milk coffee”. It is the simple combination of milk and coffee. In contains 190 calories in each 16oz cup of latte.

          1/2 Foamed Milk %e5%a5%b6%e6%b3%a1 + 1/6 Steamed Milkmilk

         + 1/3 expressoexpresso

The biggest difference between cappuccino and latte is the proportion of foamed milk and steamed milk. There is less steamed milk and more foamed milk in a cup of cappuccino. So it has lower calories in a 16oz cappuccino, which is 120.

Flat White

     1/2 Steamed Milkmilk+ 1/2 expressoexpresso

Flat white is more popular in Australia and New Zealand. You may wonder what is the difference between flat white and latte. According to Eileen P, Kenny, who is a barista, coffee writer, and the creator of Birds of Unusual Vitality, there are two stunning differences between those two types:

“Typically, in the specialty coffee world, a flat white has just a little bit less microfoam than a latte, and often less volume, but is still creamy milk over the same amount of espresso,”

“The other difference is that a latte is generally served in a glass — though this differs from cafe to cafe — while a flat white is served in ceramic, also often in a smaller ceramic than a cappuccino, but again, this varies place to place.”

If you want to learn more about flat white, you can read Wait, What Exactly Is a Flat White? We asked an Aussie and Kiwi. You may find more answers.

cafe-mocha                  1/6 Creamcream+ 1/3 Steamed Milkmilk

                 +1/6 Chocolate Cream%e5%b7%a7%e5%85%8b%e5%8a%9b%e9%85%b1 +1/3 expressoexpresso

If you want to have a sweeter coffee, mocha will be your best choice. And it has higher calories as a result, which is 360.

One of my friends once asked me, “I think hot chocolate is too sweet, but coffee is too bitter, what should I have?” Now you know the answer is a cup of mocha.

Caramel Macchiato

%e7%84%a6%e7%b3%96%e7%8e%9b%e5%a5%87%e6%9c%b5          1/6 Caramel Saucecaramel+1/6 Foamed Milk%e5%a5%b6%e6%b3%a1

+1/3 Expressoexpresso

Caramel macchiato is my personal favorite coffee. Since it will be a little bit sweet with the caramel sauce, and a little bit bitter because of the expresso, everything is just right when I drink it. Although its calories is not very low, which is 250, you can still try it to feel the combination of caramel, milk, and expresso.

In this blog, I only introduce ingredients of some popular coffee. Actually, there are a lot more different kinds of coffee with different ingredients and proportion. Here is a passage named 12 Different Types of Coffee Explained that you may want to read about other coffee’s ingredients.

Next week, I will explain what is the appropriate time to drink coffee and tea in a day. Remember to come back and enjoy the journey with me!
